About This Site
This site is a work of love for family and history. Back in the early 1980's my Aunt Carol (Colburn) Smith began to explore our family's heritage and genealogy and discovered a long-forgotten Grandfather known in his day for living in three centuries, but who was also an amateur poet named Noah Brockway Bacon. It was during this time she asked her mother Daisy Maude (Bacon) Colburn, to write down memories of her childhood. (Grandma never liked her first name and always went by Maude. If I remember correctly, I think her mother let her older sister name her!)
As a child I loved hearing my Grandma Colburn tell stories of how life used to be when she grew up. Even back then it seemed a different world already lost through time. But it was not until my aunt's passing when I inherited some of the old family portraits and mementos, that my interest reignited into exploring our family's history, not only in documents and photos but also in the number of written works of poetry and storytelling they had created. It was then that I took to the internet to see if I could find more. And amazingly enough, I did.
On this site you will find all the known works of Noah Brockway Bacon, and also four short stories and a newspaper article written by my Grandma "Maude" (Bacon) Colburn, Noah's Great Great Granddaughter. In addition are a few stories my Aunt Carol wrote down from Grandma Maude and included in her Bacon Family Newsletter she self-published and distributed to the family back in the 1980's.
The final stories of the history of the Douglas clan come from the family of my Grandpa Chester Colburn's mother, Libbie Amanda (Douglas) Colburn. They were written by her sister Maybelle Effie (Douglas) Hart and tell the story of their arrival into Wisconsin at about the same time as the Bacons and the Colburns were making their way here from the east coast in the middle 19th century. Such is the circle of life from my ancestors to me. It is my hope that sharing their stories will bring understanding and joy to those who read them today.
